Academic Senate
The Academic Senate is the voice for the faculty in the shared governance process. The Academic Senate makes recommendations to the administration related to the following areas of professional and academic responsibility:
- Curriculum, including establishing prerequisites and placing courses within disciplines
- Degree and certificate requirements
- Grading policies
- Educational program development
- Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success
- District and college governance structures, as related to faculty roles
- Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes, including self-study and annual reports
- Policies for faculty professional development activities
- Processes for program review
- Processes for institutional planning and budget development
In addition, the Academic Senate is responsible for making recommendations regarding other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon with the governing board. We call this the "10 + 1".
The most important tools in Academic Senate work are the senators. Senate goals are met through their commitment to the best interests of higher education and diligence in carrying out the work of committees and task groups.
